GPT-5 Review: Worth the Upgrade? (2026)
GPT-5 is faster, smarter, and multimodal. But is it worth $20/mo? We tested it against GPT-4 on real tasks.
Yes, GPT-5 is worth the $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription if you do any combination of writing, coding, research, or multimodal work weekly. The hallucination rate is roughly half of GPT-4o's, voice mode is dramatically better, and image generation is now built in. If you only chat occasionally, the free tier (limited GPT-5 + unlimited GPT-4o mini) is enough.
What Changed Since Launch
GPT-5 shipped in January 2026. After three months of daily use we re-tested it against GPT-4o on the same 25-task benchmark we ran originally.
Is It Worth the Upgrade?
Short answer: **yes, if you use ChatGPT more than twice a week.**

What's Genuinely New
Reasoning that holds together
The biggest qualitative change is GPT-5's ability to maintain a chain of reasoning across long, multi-step problems. Tasks that used to require careful prompting (legal analysis, multi-file refactors, financial modeling) now work on the first ask.
Native multimodal end-to-end
GPT-5 takes text, image, audio, and short video as input and can output text, images, and speech in the same response. There's no model switching anymore.
Voice mode that doesn't feel scripted
Advanced Voice Mode in GPT-5 handles interruptions, accents, and code-switching naturally. It's the first time voice AI has felt closer to talking to a person than dictating to a transcript.
Lower hallucination rate
OpenAI's reported reduction in hallucinations matches what we see in practice — but **don't stop fact-checking**. GPT-5 is more confident, which makes the remaining errors harder to spot.

FAQ
Is GPT-5 free to use?
Yes, the free tier includes limited GPT-5 access plus unlimited GPT-4o mini. Heavy users will hit the cap and need to wait or upgrade to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month).
Is GPT-5 better than Claude 3.5 Sonnet?
For multimodal work, voice, and broad versatility — yes. For long-form writing, document analysis, and nuanced reasoning, Claude often still wins. Many professionals subscribe to both.
Does GPT-5 hallucinate?
Less than previous models, but yes. We measured roughly a 3% hallucination rate on factual questions versus ~7% for GPT-4o. Always verify critical information.
Can GPT-5 generate images and video?
It generates images natively (GPT-image) and accepts video as input but does not yet generate video. For video generation, see our best AI video editor guide.
Is the GPT-5 API cheaper than GPT-4?
Yes — current API pricing is $1.25 per million input tokens, lower than the equivalent GPT-4 class models at launch.
